UNITAR’s Multilateral Diplomacy Programme (MDP) completed a two-day training from 28-29 June 2010 on performing effectively in the multilateral diplomatic environment. The workshop brought together representatives of Permanent Missions in Geneva and helped the participants strengthen the skills needed to prepare for and participate in international fora, specifically multilateral conferences.

Geneva is one of the most active centers of multilateral diplomacy in the world, and plays host to about 21,000 yearly meetings attended by more than 150,000 delegates. The workshop aims to equip diplomats engaging in this line of work with the tools to better understand the dynamics and processes of the conference environment in order to communicate their message, negotiate with other delegations, and fulfill their mandate.

This training is part of the UNITAR’s Core Diplomatic Training, short and intensive activities offered to diplomats based at United Nations Headquarters and Offices, as well as host cities of regional commissions.

See the following video to watch highlights during the workshop’s second day. Participants work in groups during an exercise and give their feedback on the training.
